About the project

The project Moral Progress: Individual and Collective (MoPIC) examines the complex relationships between individual and collective moral progress in contemporary society, drawing on the rich history of philosophical debates on moral progress. With a focus on understanding how moral improvement occurs on both personal and societal levels, the research team delves into philosophical debates, ethical theories, and interdisciplinary approaches. The project investigates the role of emotions, responsibility, and collective actions in shaping moral advancements, addressing questions such as how communities can foster ethical reflection and what role individuals play in collective moral progress. By deepening the understanding of these dynamics, the project aims to contribute to ongoing academic discussions and provide valuable insights into the nature of moral progress.

Project objectives are:

  • to explore aspects of individual moral progress and the role of emotions in moral progress
  • to explore aspects of collective moral progress and establish the significance of moral reflection for moral progress
  • to explore the relationship between individual and collective moral progress (particularly within the context of behavioural aspects of moral progress)
  • to explore the evolutionary and metaethical framework of the debate about moral progress
